E J Engel pictured right, having been transferred from the Atchison
Topeka & Santa Fe depot in Emporia, arrived with his wife Sadie at
Argentine, Kansas in 1883 and would become the operator/agent for
the new Santa Fe depot.

There were important duties that awaited him at his new job. He was not
only responsible for passenger service to and from Argentine but was also
in charge of handling mail, freight and precious metals shipments arriving
from the American Smelter in Argentine, Kansas.
